I used to do this pose when I was a gymnast. For years it was something that we did for conditioning and the focus was to feel the burn in my shoulders and hold it longer than any of my teammates. Now that I have returned to this pose through yoga, I see it though an entirely different light. Although it still takes a lot of shoulder and upper body strength, my main focus is to open my heart center, to feel the energy coursing through my body from my hands and feet, to find balance while inverted. My love for yoga comes from the change in perspective from when I was a young competitive gymnast to now—a young woman trying to open herself up to new perspectives.
