Crazy?

Having read about Ganesh Baba on various websites I was looking for an intimate portrayal of the man by someone who knew him well. What I got was a rather poorly explained version of his philosophy with an apologetic glance at his more infamous behaviour. Spirituality and drugs ... the west cannot handle the combination and the author does not seem to want to attempt to tackle the subject apart from some general asides relating to smoking a joint or refilling his pipe.

Not recommended.

AWESOME

Seane is luminous! Her heart comes through on each breath, each spoken word. This practice saturates your entire being as you breathe, lengthen, fold, twist, invert, backbend and open your center. She brings you safely into a place of utter vulnerability and assists you in reaching deep into your self to release all that no longer serves you. There are so many kinds of pain we hold on to and not just in our tight hamstrings or rigid spines. You'll sweat, you'll cultivate your inner flame, you'll come into deep peace and you may even find yourself in the center of your emotions, letting go and creating space for light, for love and for truth! I can not say enough about this practice! Be patient with yourself, even if you just sit and listen the first time around until you are inspired to move. It is a whole practice and Seane delivers detox beautifully!

Closest thing to a "source code" that we have

The two best known English translations of Svatmarama's classical text on yoga from the Fifteenth Century are by Pancham Singh and Elsy Becherer. The former is 87 years old and the latter is a translation (with commentary by Hans-Ulrich Rieker) from the German, and is therefore twice removed from the original Sanskrit. Both books are out of print. Surprisingly there is virtually nothing else in English despite the fact that the hatha yoga teachings found in popular works, including B.K.S. Iyengar's celebrated Light on Yoga, are in no small part based on Svatmarama's text.

Brian Dana Akers brings us a new translation set with the English following the Sanskrit verse by verse. His style is straightforward, clear and elegant. He does not make the mistake of trying to translate yogic terms that are really not translatable, e.g., "nadi," "prana," "bandha," "mudra," etc. Instead he invites us to use a dictionary of yoga. He also makes the sly suggestion in his brief but graceful Introduction that "the scientifically minded do some empirical research. In a peaceful country, in a quiet place, free of all anxieties..." (p. xii)

Well, I have done some small research and I can tell you that Svatmarama knows whereof he speaks. I can also say along with Akers that I do not recommend some of Svatmarama's practices, (some of the "cleansing" mudras are unnecessary today; indeed they are dangerous) and clearly the old master exaggerates. However, his intention was not hyperbole. He spoke instead in what is called an "intentional language" that would guide teachers and advanced practitioners without confusing or revealing too much to beginners. This way of speaking is also called samdhya-bhasha ("twilight language") according to Georg Feuerstein. Thus a practice that allows one to become "young, even if old" may be distinguished from another practice that "destroys death," which in turn may be distinguished from one which leads to the place where "time is not."

Even though I first encountered the text almost 25 years ago and have read it several times, I did indeed find a dictionary helpful. I used Georg Feuerstein's definitive The Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga (1997), but could have also used an English-Sanskrit dictionary to explore the more secular meanings of some words, which might have given me a better feel for some of the nuances of expression used by Svatmarama. To really appreciate Svatmarama's text perhaps this from Feuerstein might be helpful: "Language has the curious capacity to both disclose and veil the truth, and since ancient times the masters of India's spirituality have been especially sensitive to the possibilities and the limitations of linguistic communication." (Opus cited, p. 167) Rather than throw himself into the briar patch of Svatmarama's expression, Akers has wisely stepped to the side and let the text speak for (and against) itself.

But what is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika? It is simply a course in how to obtain samadhi, or liberation or freedom from the pairs of opposites that dominate our lives. It begins with asana and pranayama and ends with transcendence. All of the postures so familiar to us, and all of the breathing exercises have but one purpose: meditation leading to pushing aside the veil of ignorance that characterizes ordinary existence. It takes a long time to get there. The "empirical research" that Akers recommends will be a project of years (unless of course one is particularly gifted).

What is not mentioned in Svatmarama's delineation are the ethical and spiritual considerations called the yamas and niyamas that we find in Patanjali. I recommend that the Hatha Yoga Pradipika be studied in conjunction with Patanjali's celebrated sutras as aids to your practice. They have much in common, but there are some significant differences. Svatmarama makes no concessions to political correctness nor to social or religious considerations. His text is indeed striking in its terse and single-minded, even profane, ambition. Quite simply there is a problem: bondage to samsara. And there is a solution: hatha yoga leading to raja yoga leading to liberation.

Brian Dana Akers and the people at YogaVidya are to be complimented for bringing this text to the general public and for doing so in a most attractive manner. This is the book you want after you have finished with the popular texts.

Beautiful poetry, amazing writing!

I picked up the Yoga Poems after reading the author's collection of short stories, Green Tea To Go. This is poetry at its absolute best. I know very little about yoga poses and breathing exercises. But this is a collection about the language of emotion, the difficult postures of passion, this is for anyone who's struggled with loss, or as the author puts it in her introduction, feels like an "expatriate in my own skin." I loved the poetry about healing, a search for serenity in the jolting insanity of every-day life. And some of the lines are so frank and funny, I couldn't stop laughing. For example, the first line in, "Knee to Ear," is, "I was almost married to dispassion." It suddenly reminded me of this girl back when and then this and that and as I went on, it was a very sad poem reflecting on the poet's past. On the reverse side, there's a sensuality that reminds one of the bodily calligraphy that yoga forms with every pose.
"There are two perfect
shapes in the world
a man once said:
... and he
might have added a third:
a woman's body."
I appreciated the honesty of, "Lord of the Fish." "There is one pose I cannot do," it starts. I've tried yoga several times and there's a thousand poses I can't do, haha. I highly recommend this book for any fan of poetry independent of your knowledge of yoga. If you love language, these are literally, "Lines to unfold by."

A Very Thorough Translation & Interpretation

I have read more than one translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and this, by far, is the best one. Swami Satyananda Saraswati presents a very clear, direct explanation of each sutra in English. There is both a Sanskrit and English version of the Sutras before the English explanation. Each sutra is treated individually with Swami Satyananda Saraswati's insights which illuminate the text so that the most knowledge can be gained from reading about very ancient yet important yoga precepts.

I read a lot of ratings which mark a text down for its "complexity", and I don't know if that is necessary here. I would say the text is thorough, which is what you want when a yogi translates and interprets the text. You want to get both a context and a further foundation for further study, and this book provides both. This is definitely 5 stars, and if you enjoy it, try looking at other works by the same author. He's one of the most intelligent authors I have come across on the subject of yoga.

The Serpent Power

I, Dick Morris, the "Sunshine Man," sincerely hope that you, and everyone that you care about, will have Long, Healthy, Happy, Life experiences! I also hope that by the year 2077 there will be Peace with Justice for All people and all non-human animals, all over planet Earth!!

Although I was really glad to read the author's review of what and where our bodies different energy centers are, references to the truth of the "Oneness of all creation!", stating our need for enhancing all life!, the benefits of being involved in Yoga and briefly mentioning what Kundalini is; I stopped reading "The Serpent Power" at page 50 of this 500 page book because I found the constant use of non-english words (I believe they were words from the sanskrit language) extremely annoying and very confusing because I do not know sanskrit.

I really hope that someone, who understands sanskrit, will write a book on the subjects covered in "The Serpent Power" without the sanskrit words!!!

A bit goofy

Honestly, this was a lot of alternative medicine, midwifery, and herbal healing. If you're an expert, this book made ense. If you're a novice or just looking for an alternative to regular medicine, it's going to be a bit too much. I didn't find it helpful and ended up giving it away. I felt like I had to be an expert to use it.

Shortcut to Bliss

This book is thought-provoking; yet, it's very aim is to move beyond thought.

I'm trying the techniques gently with mixed success. It appears they work best for me after yoga when the body and mind are naturally more in tune.

It is not well-written - but it is very well intended. The translation is not perfect - but the book is quite understandable in terms of the suggested practices.

If you prefer chakra energy exercises, this might provide useful insight for you. Don't expect miracles, it takes practice!

The fruits of the practice arrive when you least expect them. I think it opens you up to awareness of bliss and you more readily accept it into your life. Like the Christian notion of grace, you can't create it - you can only prepare to accept it! May bliss find you!

esoteric secrets

This book is written by Swami Rama, a yogi who came to American in the late 70's. He let western doctors study him to advance the scientific understanding of yoga. He claimed to have been able to hold his breath for over an hour. He started a yoga facility in Pennsylvania, which still exists.

As for the book, it contains a wealth of information on various breathing practices -- practices you might hear referred to elsewhere but never explained. Often experts don't explain these things because they consider these practices too dangerous for beginners. But what eager beginner hasn't pushed limits? I suppose caution is in order.

In the year I practiced yoga, I also learned that within the yoga community, secrecy is like a currency, or a way to maintain power.

The Swami later published simpler books, because this book went over the heads of most people. And if you are just looking to get started with the breath, you could look on the internet for 2 to 3 key breathing exercises. No need to buy this book. The next volume in this series doesn't really go into the breath much, but the overall practice of yoga.
