Do It At Home

I have been doing moderate Hatha Yoga since I was a teenager, on and off
my whole life. I discovered Bikram and did go to two studios for a while.
The first one closed and the second one had a school of ugly, jealous women
who were instructors. I don't know why they were so mean and jealous;
perhaps because I am very pretty (inside and out), confident and can do a
lot of poses well because I am both strong AND flexible. My balance is
impeccable.

I'm not competitive about yoga; I just like to do my best. Yet, since I don't
like ugly and insecure and jealous I decided to try it at home and it
works beautifully! I fill the tub with hot water while my three space
heaters are blasting and towels cover the floor. It is perfect. I get to do
hot yoga without leaving my home! In the summer, it get especially humid
and hot. The book is a great reference for inspiration. It doesn't take
more than a few times to memorize the poses and keep in mind what you are
aiming for. And for those who say, you can't do it at home, I say, you
are wrong; in fact, Bikram used space heaters in the early days of building
his Bikram Yoga school. It is a great practice!

And for all you mean people out there who don't like women who like
themselves, go ahead and vote that you didn't find this review helpful!
You'll be letting the whole world know you have a self esteem problem.

Very helpful!

This is the second time I've bought this book. First I bought it for myself and fell in love with it. Bikram is crazy, yes, but the book is so freaking helpful for explaining how to do the poses the way you're *supposed* to do them. Why even bother with miserable hot yoga unless you're going to do it exactly right and get all the benefits from it? I want to do exactly what Bikram prescribes and this book is SUPER HELPFUL for learning exactly the right way to do the poses. Plus, it's nice to see photos of people who aren't 100 pound noodles doing the poses. I ended up giving the book to my best friend when she got excited about bikram yoga. Now I have bought the book for myself a second time. It's that good.

Powerful and Transforming

I have been a Bikram Yoga fan for 20 years...when I first discovered these postures, in 1988, from Bikram's book published in 1978, "Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class", I did the entire 90 minute set at home, everyday, for 4 months -- also, no heat, so that part is not absolutely necessary. These postures will transform you, physically and psychologically -- they are very powerful and I can't recommend them enough.

Not only did I get into better shape, but it also gave me a sense of calm and peace and it completely healed my tendency to occasionally compulsively overeat. In all the years since, I have never eaten to fill an emotional void. I have recommended Yoga to many people and don't understand why people with weight issues don't commit to Yoga. It is very powerful!

Good read and funny as well..

I bought this book a few years ago and have reread it many times. It's funny to "read his accent" and to learn what we do wrong and how to do it correctly.

Pretty Good-- You Can Do It On Your Own

You should be able to learn Bikram on your own with this book. It will take time to read through it ahead of time, because it's hard to do poses while trying to read the instructions. I read it through most of the way before attempting a session on my own. Then I took the book with me in the bathroom (where I tried to get the room warm) and slowly worked my way through it, reading and posing, reading and posing. It took me over two hours to do it the first time. I felt good afterward! Haven't done it since though, because it's time consuming (trying to learn with the book). It would probably be best to attend an actual Bikram class the first few times, and then use the book to go off what you know, but for those who don't have a class in their area (like me), this book makes it doable on your own. The only thing is, I found the instructions for the breathing exercises (said to be a very important skill to master) hard to understand the way it was written. As for all the comments saying Bikram comes off as pompous and arrogant, I disagree. He's using a sense of humor that's all. In between each pose, he has a "script" of sorts from a "class." In it he jests with his students, poking fun at them (to get a point across), and they do it back to him. So, he pokes fun at them AND at himself. Nothing to get offended about! Other than that, he's just putting a confident foot forward, because he really believes in the power of this yoga. I wouldn't want a teacher who half-heartedly endorsed what he was teaching.

Product Description

All yoga students, beginners or advanced, will benefit from this accessible book. It studies each of the 26 movements, breathing exercises and rest poses that form the basis of every Bikram yoga class. Regular practise will completely transform your health by reversing and preventing illness. This is the only guide available on Bikram Yoga. 'It's never too late, it's never too bad, you're never too old, you're never too sick to start from scratch once again.' Bikram Choudhury Bikram yoga began when Bikram, a former yoga champion, made a full recovery from a crippling accident thanks to yoga, heat and his guru, Bishnu Ghosh. His guru then sent Bikram to Bombay to heal the sick with yoga. Finding that he did not have enough time to help everybody individually, Bikram began to develop an accessible sequence of postures that everyone could follow and benefit from. Today, every class follows the same sequence of 26 postures and exercises in a studio heated to 100 degrees F. This reader-friendly guide studies each of the 26 movements in detail, showing and describing the 'ideal' position as well as what the beginner is more likely to be able to achieve initially and the problems they are likely to encounter. Each move is also accompanied by details of its specific health benefit and a student's personal experience of the posture.

Amazon.com Review

Bikram Choudhury, author of the newly revised Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class and yoga guru to the stars, is on a mission to heal America through yoga. Bikram claims that faithfully doing his yoga routine, which consists of 26 hatha yoga asanas (postures) set down by Patanjali over 4,000 years ago, can fix everything from chronic diseases (like heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis) to obesity and depression. According to Bikram, his beginning yoga class exercises 100 percent of the body, increases energy, and leaves you looking and feeling fantastic.

The book contains nearly 200 photographs illustrating each of the poses. Each asana is also accompanied by detailed directions on how to do it the right way. Can't quite twist your leg around your head or touch your nose to your knee? Bikram will tell you how to modify poses so one day you, too, can resemble a pretzel.

This is not an easy workout. Even intermediate students will find Bikram's yoga routine, which requires about an hour to complete, challenging. Need encouragement? Beginning Yoga contains suggestions for maintaining proper yoga practice, a section on the medical benefits of yoga, notes from Bikram's students, and a good dose of Bikram humor and philosophy. If you can't get to one of Bikram's 100 yoga centers and want to give his style of "hot yoga" a try, open up Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class and let Bikram work his magic on your body, mind, and spirit. --Ellen Albertson
