Don't forget to read this book

Absolutely loved this book. Particularly liked the use of the author's journal entries and poetry. Learned so much about my body and what it can do for me, my spirit, and in my journey. This is a book to read again and again.

Lacking scientific updated evidence

The book offers a lot of information and personal testimonials but lacks organization and the scientific update in the area where neurobiology and yoga and psychotherapy meet. Although it is an optimistic book and very sweetly written , I believe that it is necessary to add new perspectives and findings (both from East and the West) in order to prove and explain the astonishing scientific integration of the above mentioned three areas of self-knowledge and body awareness. The Himalayan Institute, Dr. Daniel Siegel of Mind-sight Institute and the Bangalore institute of Yoga research definitely fit in this book with their exquisite long research. Otherwise, a nice read.

A Wasted Opportunity

Having gained much from Yoga in my life, including enhanced awareness of myself, my life's purpose and the connection between caring for my body and general well-being, I had high hopes for this book. Instead of exploring the many ways body work can interplay with emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being much of this book is spent on ideas that fall into the category of believing twelve impossible things before breakfast. Cellular memory is at the core of this complilation of ignorance. The author reveals her basic ignorance of human physiology when she states erroneously that the use of the same neurotransmitters in other tissues as are used in the brain supports the idea that functions attributed to the brain also take place in other parts of the body. One of the fascinating and genuinely awe inspiring aspects of biological beings in general is the ability to use the same basic building blocks for completely different functions. That is an idea that could serve as a useful metaphor in life, but instead, the misrepresentation is used as the basis for a mostly useless mishmash of therapeutic myths, quasi-spiritual rambling and seemingly random "new age" fantasy. It is too bad that she wrapped up her experience in such foolishness because at a few small points in the book, she describes aspects of real experience such as emotional release during Yoga that ring true. Had she actually focused the book on these real experiences rather than trying for some completely unfounded explanatory concepts, it might have been worth something. As it is, unless you think that your memories are stored in your connective tissues, this book is probably not for you.

Fantastic, beutiful and educating.

I can't express myself enough because it is so big, beautiful and educating, and Elissa Cobb uses many ways of saying and research things, so much work in it, so sophisticated, so heart connecting,. I connect with her in opinions, suggestions, and I am thankful for how earnest she is about to work it out. It isn't easy to write about life struggle and pain, but Elissa Cobb gets to the reader in many ways on her view of what has happened and to use the value of it in day to day life. Shared in a beautiful way. I am a thankful reader.

Wonderful!

Elissa is a gifted teacher and guide and that shines through her writing. The Forgotten Body is informative and full of insights Elissa has gathered in her years as a personal trainer and yoga therapist as well as in her personal journey, yet her writing leaves room for my own experiences and ideas to mix with her perspectives and research. After reading The Forgotten Body I came away with a wealth of new ideas about the human physical and emotional bodies and their interconnectedness, and also I learned new ways to explore my personal experience of the interplay between the body and mind I inhabit.

Product Description

THE FORGOTTEN BODY is a finalist for the 2008 ForeWord Book of the Year Awards! In The Forgotten Body: A Way of Knowing and Understanding Self, Elissa Cobb, co-director of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, shares the wisdom and insight she has gained from her own lengthy journey of self-actualization. This book deals with the body as an overlooked repository for the most profound scrolls of personal wisdom that one is likely to discover.

Like many before her, Cobb finds herself confronted with the undeniable connection of the mind to the body. Her own journey has led her to the realization that mastery of one's mind can be most effectively attained through the rediscovery of one's physical body. Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy serves as the model for the developing synthesis of psychology, spirituality and bodywork, to give the reader a solid foundation of personal physical discovery from which to grow.

With her own personal truths used as examples of the body's powers of wisdom, Elissa Cobb urges the reader to take them just as they are; her own truth, not the truth. The text follows a ground up approach beginning with the use of one s body as a foundation for self-discovery and proceeds skyward, leading the reader along a path that many will find parallel to their own life journeys.

The Forgotten Body is not a rulebook or a rigid doctrine. It is a guide to the rediscovery of the simple and profound truths of one's own body. As the great yogi Saraha said in the late eighth century, The most profound pilgrimage I can ever make is within my own body.

The Forgotten Body was written for those who are searching for personal authenticity, those who want to begin or develop a transformative practice, and those who have a body. It is intended for anyone who is intrigued by the possibility of looking inside rather than outside for the answers to life s questions. In a culture where many have become accustomed to looking outside of themselves for guidance, this book offers the reader an opportunity to turn inside for the answers to questions about life and self.
