Excellent Beginners resource for AshtangaI recently began an Ashtanga class and purchased this book to prompt poses during practice. The book provides a very detailed description and photos about how to get in and out of poses. It even tells you how to breathe. While I'm certain had I used only the book and not the class instruction to learn Ashtanga, I would not have developed the same depth of understanding. However, this book remains an excellent resource.
Used! This book was an old library book so it was definitely used. It is okey as long as it is in good order. I thought it was maybe more used than I would have liked to buy, if I knew.
But it was wrapped in a plastic shield. It was in good condition and in the mail-out it said it was a library book. But not until then I got that information.
Other than that I think it is a great start out manual! I highly recommend it!
Great bookI am a beginner and it's a wonderful book with proper descriptions - I use it at home and very glad for it.
Very Difficult to Understand and ExecuteI just tried to go through this book and it was a very frustrating experience. I haven't been doing yoga for very long but jesus christ! this book was so difficult. Not only are the postures poorly described but I felt they were for people who have been training for many years. If you are looking for some yoga you can do on your own and you aren't that experienced DO NOT get this book. This book doesn't even take into consideration the fact that NOT EVERYONE IS AS FLEXIBLE AS YOGA MASTERS! Cut beginners some slack John for christ's sake! I can see someone really hurting themselves with this book. Would not recommend this to anyone I know.
Excellent self-teaching toolThis book is beautifully and intuitively laid out. I have some experience in yoga classrooms, and a variety of various types of home video yoga products. Ashtanga is my favorite practice, and I wanted to learn a good deal more about the practice that I was unable to glean from home videos. The book begins explaining about the bandhas (3 locks or seals that you should control during yoga practice), the breathing techniques (ujjayi) and the dristis (gaze points). Next are sun salutations. The way in which the book is laid out for learning the movements is brilliant. First, little pictures of a yoga practitioner are laid out on one page in order to demonstrate the transitions through an entire movement. This is followed by pages of the movements (larger pictures of the practitioner) with detailed explanations neatly laid out next to each movement. After the sun salutations, the format changes slightly, but the overall layout remains the same with pictures and neat explanations, with clear indication on which positions need to be held longer, etc. This is an excellent home reference tool for Ashtanga yoga. I have found it extremely helpful. Besides the ease of use, I was particularly pleased to have something that explained more thoroughly through words and pictures how to transition precisely from vertical to horizontal positions, for example, and a reference helping me to understand which dristis to look toward, and which bandhas to focus on during each movement.
