this is my Bible.Like so many others that have reviewed this book, I too have bought it repeatedly just to end up giving it away to someone. My first encounter with the book was because someone had given it to me. I do recommend buying this book, do it. I read it for the first time about 5 years ago, and a week ago I read the center portion (the trippy part), outloud to my boyfriend for hours while tripping on lsd for the first time. That is when it occurred to me that this is A Bible. A guide to the way It Is.
I plan on buying 20 copies and handing them out at Burning Man this year, that is how life-altering I think this book is. Buy it! Read more...

Pretty Good-- You Can Do It On Your OwnYou should be able to learn Bikram on your own with this book. It will take time to read through it ahead of time, because it's hard to do poses while trying to read the instructions. I read it through most of the way before attempting a session on my own. Then I took the book with me in the bathroom (where I tried to get the room warm) and slowly worked my way through it, reading and posing, reading and posing. It took me over two hours to do it the first time. I felt good afterward! Haven't done it since though, because it's time consuming (trying to learn with the book). It would probably be best to attend an actual Bikram class the first few times, and then use the book to go off what you know, but for those who don't have a class in their area (like me), this book makes it doable on your own. The only thing is, I found the instructions for the breathing exercises (said to be a very important skill to master) hard to understand the way it was written. As for all the comments saying Bikram comes off as pompous and arrogant, I disagree. He's using a sense of humor that's all. In between each pose, he has a "script" of sorts from a "class." In it he jests with his students, poking fun at them (to get a point across), and they do it back to him. So, he pokes fun at them AND at himself. Nothing to get offended about! Other than that, he's just putting a confident foot forward, because he really believes in the power of this yoga. I wouldn't want a teacher who half-heartedly endorsed what he was teaching.
