Not worth the hype

I wanted to like this book. Everyone I knew loved it and said I had to read this book. I didn't make it past Italy. I was disappointed that she was paid to take this trip (book advance) and wondered how much of it was manufactured for the book. Also, to me, her tone seemed haughty and self-important.

Awesome, nothing left out

This book is a very comprehensive take on hatha yoga. Complete with illustrations of postures, steps to achieve them, benevolent effects and even philosophical context, nothing is left out in this book. I am writing two years after purchase, and I am still loving it!

One Glaring Flaw

I haven't read this book through, just examined the treatments of a few poses. That was enough to see that the book wasn't what I was looking for -- a quick visual reference to the muscular activity involved in a pose a la Delavier's Strength Training Anatomy. Trouble is that the illustrations highlight all involved muscles in red. I then have to go to the text to see which muscles are working and which are stretching. The stretching muscles should have been in blue so that the reader could see at a glance what's happening in the pose. I'm sure it's well done for what it is but ultimately not very helpful.

Lovely, lovely translation

Adored this book. Satchidananda gives a beautiful translation and offers a very accessible interpretation of the Sutras. Understand that this is a book of cannon and as such is subject to the attitudes of its interpreters - but Satchidananda's is one of inclusiveness and reverence. He comes from a long tradition of study but does not overwhelm the reader with information. Excellent translation, easy read, very informative & thought provoking - definitely worthwhile.

Entertaining and Stimulating

I enjoy reading world literature and appreciate nice translations. I also liked the questions interspersed through the text. Far too few people read nowdays and from that small pool few seem to question or think about what they read. History on Yoga

Nice, easy book to understand yoga and where it came from. Good book to have to refer to every once in a while on history of teachers spreading yogic practices, on Pranayam and some basic yoga posture. Useful to me as a teacher. Reference book.

This book is great content wise - but there were some issues with the way the book was put together. The pages weren't cut very well, and several had to be hand cut to separate. Other than the time it took to do this without tearing the whole page it's a very nice book.
